Terry Dunn has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of J.E. Dunn Construction Group Inc. (formerly known as Dunn Industries) since 1989. J.E. Dunn Construction Group Inc. is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, and is the holding company for commercial contractor and construction company affiliates across the nation, including J. E. Dunn Construction Company. Terry serves as a director of Kansas City Southern where he is a member of the compensation and organization committee and the nominating committee . Mr. Dunn also serves on the Board of Directors of UMB Financial Corporation and H&R Block Bank (a wholly-owned subsidiary of H&R Block. Inc.).
The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts will be one of the most architecturally distinct buildings in Kansas City. What have been the greatest challenges in constructing such a unique design?
The Kauffman Center is one of the most challenging projects ever constructed by JE Dunn. The structure is extremely complex and requires several BIM specialists doing three dimensional coordination of two dimensional construction drawings.
JE Dunn has projects in all regions of the country. What are the distinct challenges and/or benefits of working on projects in Kansas City compared to other markets nationally?
The Southwest, South Central, and Southeast Regions of our country appear to be emerging early from the recession. States that are “Right to Work” and have low taxes or no corporate taxes are well positioned to grow. Both Missouri and Kansas are fiscally conservative, which bodes well for recovery. Speculations and over-building in this region have been modest. We appear to be well positioned for recovery over the next 12 to 18 months.
In your opinion, what has been the most impressive aspect of the new JE Dunn headquarters?
Our employees are very proud of our new headquarters. Employees are inviting family, friends, and associates to tour our facility. I can feel the employee pride in both the building and the company.
How does JE Dunn plan to stay busy despite the lack of new construction expected over the next couple of years?
JE Dunn has a very diverse practice of various types of construction work throughout the company. We are trying to deploy our team members to these opportunities.
What Kansas City restaurant is your favorite? What is the best item on the menu?
My wife, Peggy Dunn, Mayor of Leawood, and I enjoy dining in numerous restaurants in Leawood.
